Required Small Group Curriculum:

During this eight-week course, students are required to lead a weekly small group in their own ministry context using Dan Kimball’s media curriculum titled They Like Jesus But Not the Church (TLJBNTC).  Kimball’s curriculum kit was published by Zondervan but is no longer in print in boxed form. However, students may obtain these required course materials in a variety of ways:
  • First, students may locate a used copy of the entire TLJBNTC curriculum kit.
  • Second, students may purchase a new or used trade paperback copy of TLJBNTC (ISNB 978-0310245902) and a used copy of the TLJBNTC DVD (ISBN 978-0310277880), both of which are required for this course. The trade paperback is in print, but the DVD is no longer distributed by Zondervan. Students may also elect to purchase one or more copies of the optional TLJBNTC participant’s guide (ISBN 978-0310277941) for their group members. This trade paperback resource is not required, however.
  • Third, students may purchase a new or used trade paperback copy of TLJBNTC (ISBN 978-0310245902) and copies of the optional TLJBNTC participant’s guide (ISBN 978-0310277941), then rent electronic copies of all six videos from Faith Gateway for $2.99 each.
Students must organize their sessions and recruit participants for their small group study prior to the beginning of this course. They must schedule their first weekly session to begin so it begins in Week Two, no later than Sunday. Since GTOE courses run from Monday-Sunday, this will be the second Sunday after the first day of the course. Following each of the six sessions, online debriefings will take place in the form of threaded class discussions the following week. The sixth session of Kimball’s material needs to take place during Week Seven of the course so that final online class discussion can occur during Week Eight. Please contact the professor, Dr. Jay Akkerman, at if you have any questions about the required course element and obtaining the corresponding small group curriculum.
